We hope to run the Keio Japanese Exchange Scholarship in January 2023, depending upon the situation with Covid and travel restrictions.

Scholarships to join the Japanese exchange programme are available to current Year 9 students and current Year 11 students, thanks to the generosity of our partner school, the prestigious Keio Shonandai Fujisawa Middle and High School.

The awards are based on supporting evidence and an interview in June.

Application

To apply for a Japanese exchange scholarship, applicants should submit an application letter, outlining interest in Japan and in cultural exchanges. The applicant must:

  • Be able to commit to after school introductory Japanese lessons (a British Flag Languages Award may be achieved with extra lessons following the exchange)
  • Be able to host an exchange partner for two weeks in January/February, sharing the experience of living in Britain
  • Have not visited Japan before
  • Have a British/EU passport

Note: No prior knowledge of Japanese is required.

Interview

Interviews will take place in June. During an interview, short-listed applicants will have the opportunity to discuss their skills, interests and experience as described in their letter. Successful applicants will be able to discuss what they can offer as well as what they want to learn and see; and how they would show exchange partners Cambridge, London and a unique cultural experience.

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application in early July and will be expected to accept, or decline, within two weeks.
