Year 12 talk to universities, alumni and professionals at our careers and guidance fair

Following in the tradition of the last two years we were delighted to be able to host our Annual Careers and Guidance day on Wednesday 17 March.
On Monday we were delighted to welcome four London Colleges; London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Kings College London, University College London (UCL) and Imperial College London to give an interactive presentation to our Year 12 students on studying in London and competitive university applications.
As part of our Sixth Form Guidance Programme, Year 12 students recently attended an annual work experience workshop, however, due to the country still being affected by the pandemic, the focus this year was on virtual rather than physical opportunities.
Year 12 art students Sarah M and Lily R visited the Curwen Print Study Centre in Cambridge to gain a deeper understanding of a variety of printmaking techniques by having the opportunity to work with an array of specialised printing equipment.
In the past couple of years, we’ve increased the number of expert speakers coming in to talk to Sixth Form students about the challenges they face in this time of their lives, including topics like drugs, driving safely and relationships. We were keen to try to continue this over the period of remote learning, and the recent talk by Alex from the Self Esteem Team seemed particularly well suited to the current situation.
The boarding house is quieter than usual this term due to lockdown but for those students still present, boarding life is continuing as close to normal as possible.
In the last week of the Autumn term we finally performed our Year 13 extract of the Autumn term production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics and book by Howard Ashman.
In the last week of November, our Year 10, 11 and 12 casts gave truly fabulous final performances of their extracts of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. We are so, so proud of all the performers, musicians, crew and creatives who have worked with such enthusiasm throughout this challenging term and who have together achieved such amazing results.
The final performances were an absolute joy to watch!
The Stephen Perse Foundation, a family of leading independent co-educational schools in Cambridge and Saffron Walden, has been recognised in the Sunday Times annual Parent Power awards as the East Anglia Independent Secondary School of the Decade, to be published in full on Sunday, 29th November.
Students applying to medical, veterinary and dentistry schools now have to participate in multiple interviews at many universities when they are called for an interview. Known as ‘Multiple Mini’s’ (MMI) these normally represent around 10 different tests or stations as part of the interview process, designed to assess a range of skills in everything from dexterity to ethics.
On Friday 23 October, the Sixth Form held a 1970s-themed dress-up day to fundraise for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), a local charity that provides care and support for children with life-threatening conditions and their families across Cambridge, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.
This term our boarding students have had the opportunity to take part in a number of exciting extra-curricular activities and trips alongside their studies. Students wore masks and were socially distanced from each other where possible during these activities to minimise the risk of Covid-19.
Last month Year 12 student Maddie won the Olympic Skeet Shooting Pathway Championships in Nuthampstead. We wanted to ask her more about the sport and how she feels about winning the championship.
We were delighted to welcome Dr Adrian Boyle to Stephen Perse, consultant emergency physician at Addenbrookes Hospital, to talk to Senior School and Sixth Form students about communication skills and how they impact our effectiveness at school and work regardless of our future ambitions or the career direction we choose.
Over the last few years we have been pleased to welcome representatives from a large range of international universities to events at our old Sixth Form site. Last year we also had over 100 students and parents from schools across Cambridgeshire attend some of these conferences.
Commencing from the start of the new academic year, the Stephen Perse Sixth Form will be located on Bateman Street in well-appointed and historic buildings that exemplify the best of this dynamic and inventive city, combining legacy and facilities to support student development.
