History here certainly isn't dull or dusty. It's our past and it's our job to bring it alive – helping our pupils to uncover how it connects with life today.

History brought to life

HJunior historians at a graveistory has many faces here - a lesson might find us sorting artefacts, engaging in creative arts used in the past, storytelling, drama or role play. We might enjoy hearing from a visiting expert or take part in a workshop.

With a world of history at their fingertips - our pupils enjoy discovering facts and creating their own mini presentations of historical narratives and features.

Preparing for the future

We develop a sense of chronology, encouraging pupils to compare and contrast their lives with those of the past. Being curious about life in the past and the important concerns of those times helps to prepare our pupils for future change too.

year 3 
A study of Ancient Greece
  • Locate Greece and use the timeline to pinpoint this period
  • Understand the lives of the people through their language, education and scholarship, myths, gods and heroes, architecture, sculpture and pottery, music, theatre and sport, trading and warfare, city states, democracy and the last legacy of the Ancient Greeks
  • Visit to the Museum of Classical Archaeology
Year 4 
A study of the Roman Empire with specific regard to occupied Britain
  • Understand the reasons for the success of the Roman Army and the spread of the Roman Empire
  • Understand the impact of the invasion of Britain and the response of the Britains particularly Boudica
  • Undersand Roman society through their housing, hypocausts, aqueducts, baths and Hadrian's Wall
  • Anglo-Saxon settlement, everyday life and language, farming and feasting, pagan religion and Christianity, law and kingdoms
Year 5 
A study of the Tudors
  • Locate this period on the timeline
  • Understand the chronology of the five sovereigns, some of the important features of their lives and the messages to be read in their portraits, the religious changes they instigated, occupations, buildings and entertainment, life and war at sea
  • Visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum, participate in a workshop and enjoy a banquet
Year 6 
A study of the Victorians and Britain since 1930
  • Locate these periods on the timeline
  • Understand the lives of Victorian people through the attitudes to women, children and life at home, health, education and changes to culture and society, the development and effect of industries, technology and the railways, the Great Exhibition, the Industrial Revolution an the British Empire, study of a Victorian fishing village
  • Understanding the Great Depression, the Jarrow Crusade, causes of World War II, Britain during the Second World War: evacuation, home front and rationing, women and their work during the way, the Blitz and D-Day landings
