Music through time celebrated at Saffron Hall

Published on 27/03/18

Dame B's Prep wowed their Saffron Hall audience with a showcase of 'Music Through Time'.

Musical talent abounded at the Saffron Hall concert on Friday 23 March! Pupils from Prep performed a medley of songs and instruments with the theme of ‘Music Through Time’.

The evening began with a rousing rendition of the Dr Who theme tune by the whole of Prep and orchestra, followed by a trip in the Tardis to a ‘land before time’ with the Jurassic Park theme.

Year 3 performed Gamelan music from 7th Century Indonesia, followed by Year 4 travelling to 1448 England playing traditional Morris tunes with Morris dancing and lots of bells!

This was followed by Junior choir singing their hearts out and looking wonderful before the next journey in time took the audience to Tudor England with Year 5 playing Greensleeves and Danserye.

Wind band, brass group and the woodwind trio stunned the audience with their performances from the Classical era before the interval where many comments of praise and admiration were heard.

The second half began with year six pupils marching on stage, whistling some tunes from World War Two. A fabulous rendition of classic wartime songs, was enjoyed by all - particularly the tear-jerking performance of ‘We’ll Meet Again’ as the audience were encouraged to sing along.

Year 6 pupil, Catherine Benbow gave a stunning performance of the theme from Schindler’s List on the violin, accompanied by Matthew Rudd on the piano: a very emotional and awe-inspiring piece.

Jazz band jazzed things up with their performances of Cherokee and Put your Records on, followed by Senior Choir with their amazing vocals during Rhythm of Life and Lift my Eyes.

24 Days with their original song ‘Sticking Together Forever’, written by Sophia Demetriou- Foale, were next to perform: a talented group of musicians.

The final performance of the evening was Take these Wings by Don Besig - once again, bringing the audience to tears - before the finale, Greatest Day by Take That.

Every single child that took part was amazing. The talent and confidence of the children was astounding, clearly demonstrating that hard work, practice and enjoyment are the key to success. What a fabulous way to end another busy and fun-filled term at Dame B’s.

Some comments from parents:

“A heartfelt thank you from all my family to all those who contributed or supported the simply wonderful concert on Friday night. We all loved it and it’s just brilliant to see every single prep child taking part. The children and staff should be equally proud.”

“It was such a lovely lovely evening seeing everyone joyously take part in music of some form that was relevant to their skills.”

“Thank you for once again giving the children such an unforgettable experience on Friday evening (as for the parents!...). It is mind-blowing how you can involve each and every one of the children and produce such an incredibly high standard and diversity of music.”
