Welcome to the Art and Design Engineering Annual Summer Exhibition

The work presented in this site is the culmination of work produced by our students on the GCSE , A-level and IB Visual Arts courses. Over the course of two years students develop a personal portfolio consisting of several sketchbooks of detailed notes, research, observations and ideas relating to upwards of three major projects.

At the end of the year students are assessed on the work in their portfolio normally in the form of an exhibition. As this was not possible this year we are pleased to present to you samples of some of the students' work.

 

In year 10, students create three portfolios of coursework exploring a variety of material specialisms and manufacturing techniques, from traditional workshop skills to computer aided design and manufacture. Offering a selection of themes including biomimicry, structures, time and fragments.  For their final project which is normally set as an exam, students were given the brief in February just before lockdown. Students are required to develop ideas from the starting point of a word or phrase, and this year the theme was “Event”.

At GCSE the main theme for all of the personal portfolio of coursework is ‘Identity’. In Year 10 students examine three different projects relating to the different disciplines of fine art, digital art, and textiles art.  They use the digital Mac suite, printmaking and textile studios to develop specialist areas in their coursework. In Year 11 students specialise in one of these areas to develop further skills exploring other aspects of what makes us human and what contributes to forming our different identities. For their final project which is normally set as an exam, students were given the brief in February just before lockdown. Students are required to develop ideas from the starting point of a word or phrase, and this year the theme was “Event”. 

Students studying A-level in our Sixth Form benefit from access to a wonderful large sixth form studio space where they were able to work before the period of remote schooling to generate a fantastic body of coursework including life drawing, sculpture and installation, digital photography and film, and more traditional painting, drawing and sculpting techniques.

The IB Visual Arts course focuses on three main areas: curatorial practice, art making processes and theoretical practice. Students are required to develop a digital process portfolio and a variety of exhibition pieces to submit electronically to the IB O. They are required to organise their own exhibition and to write a statement about the curatorial intent.
