Maths in and for the community

Published on 23/12/16

Year One class got involved with the local park and community creating a few maths games for others to play.

If you visit the park near Madingley school you can find some creative games that have been carefully thought of by Ash Tree Class. Year One Madingley were thinking of different ways to improve their mental maths skills and have created a few maths games to put on display at the local park to share their fun learning with others.

One of games consists of practising number bonds. Instructions to play this game with photos and even a QR code with a video to see how to play have been created by them!

Another game’s aim is to help children improve their confidence in counting. Take a look at how many objects Year One found altogether! Multiple addition was a challenge!

Creating figures with natural resources is not only a beautiful art piece, but also helps children gain confidence in their knowledge of 2D shapes. Year One learners were challenged to include as many 2D shapes as possible. Children were further challenged to identify the names of the shapes as well as their properties (corners and sides).

We hope you find some time to come and play our games at the local park.

Remember to tweet us to let us know what you think about it @spfpreprep. By giving feedback you can help us improve our maths games!

From a learning point of view, children had many opportunities to develop mathematical concepts, as well as cooperation and collaboration skills and values. Children also had the opportunity to gain more experience with technology and digital communication. Year One learners used this opportunity to get involved in the community by creating games for others,  and maths was contextualised using natural resources. Furthermore, children learnt how to use technology to share their learning in a safe and responsible way via Twitter. These are all a few examples of the skills Year One learnt throughout this service-learning project.

Reflective activities are also a central point of this service-learning project. Learning reflection will take place once others in the community play the games and provide Year One learners with feedback.
