Year 3 Collaboration Day

Published on 19/10/18

Excitement levels were high on Wednesday 3 October as the Year 3 pupils from both the Junior School and Dame Bradbury’s boarded the ‘SPF ship’ to set sail upon ‘An Island Adventure’.

A series of activities followed, which were designed to encourage pupils to use their critical and creative thinking skills. Treasure maps were made and codes were cracked in exchange for jewels and gems.

In the afternoon a rescue mission was launched as the children designed and created a small boat in which to escape the island. When the time came to test out whether the boats were watertight, or not, a mixture of sighs and squeals of delight could be heard as the boats either floated or sank. Whatever the result there was no doubt that the children had experienced a wonderful day, packed with activities which got them thinking through problems and forming new friendships.

In their own words…

‘I learnt that boats without walls sink and things fall off. This happened to our boat. 48 out of 50 marbles didn't survive.’

Roumak

‘I loved every bit, but I especially enjoyed the code cracking and mapping. I also liked the shipbuilding. My team’s boat held all our marbles but sank at the last second. It was my best Dame Bradbury’s trip ever!’

Chloe

I enjoyed making the boat. My dad helped us assemble it. I loved the Island Hopping challenge. Dame Bradbury’s was great, but it was also challenging.’

Lana

‘I enjoyed the hoop challenge and collecting gems. I was a bit cross that our boat sank and loads of marbles fell out.’

Mohan

‘The boat making was fun because we could share ideas. I was slightly annoyed when ours sunk.’
