Design & Engineering department using 3D printer to make PPE for front line workers

Published on 17/04/20

Our Design & Engineering team are using the school's 3D printer to make protective visors for front line workers, to protect against Covid-19. Members of staff at the Senior School and Dame Bradbury's have used their time over the Easter Break to help NHS workers in this time of need.

Natasha Hammond, Design Engineering teacher at Stephen Perse, was inspired to help local GP practitioners and other workers on the front line delivering care by providing elements of much-needed PPE (personal protection equipment).

Natasha is using the 3D printer in school and her specialist knowledge to make visors.  She said:

"The visor design is based on a basic template created by one of our suppliers Kitronik that I have tweaked a little for easier assembly.   I am working with propylene and PVC sheets using existing school supplies but I will soon need more!  I am working to provide 100 visors by the end of the week and will keep going as long as I have supplies."

Caty Wynne-Powell, Head of Creative and Design Engineering at Dame Bradbury's in Saffron Walden, has been using 3D printer 'Elvis' to support key workers.

The visors are being delivered to Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Dimensions UK Cambridge, Arthur Rank Hospice Cambridge and a care home in Waterbeach.
